The Brain and Caregiving: How You Think Matters
Course Description
The brain holds many of the keys to our social, emotional, and even physical well-being. Yet, for many, it’s a mystery in terms of how it works, how it makes us react (often negatively), and how it makes us feel. S.H.I.F.T founder and creator Vic Railton walks you through the basics of understanding your brain as a caregiver and how that can help you better manage the stresses, burnout and overwhelm that comes with caring for another. The course includes:
- Part 1. TRANSFORMING A CAREGIVER’S CHOICES: Disconnecting What No Longer Serves You
- Part II. RELIVING CAREGIVING TRAUMAS: How To Stop the Reruns
- Part III. CONSTRUCTIVE THINKING: Keeping Caregivers Focused On Effective Solutions

- PART I. TRANSFORMING A CAREGIVER’S CHOICES: Disconnecting What No Longer Serves YouIn this Lesson 1, we are advancing our proof that a caregiver’s efforts to change harmful thinking patterns that cause more stress and anxiety are achievable and not just a mere theory. You will see fascinating visuals of the effects when thinking harmful repetitive thoughts, changing a thinking pattern, and what it looks like when your thought escalates into a repetitive loop. Once seen, it becomes unforgettable. And from today forward, you will recognize your own harmful patterns that cause greater anxiety and stress, and be given specific knowledge and skills to replace these patterns with. The result is avoiding serious health risks and living a calmer, more peaceful life.1
- PART II. RELIVING CAREGIVING TRAUMAS: How To Stop the RerunsIn this Lesson 2, we’ll discover another remarkable aspect of the brain that has become a valuable caregiving tool for me. It has everything to do with repetitive thinking, and usually not repeating good things, which leads us down a harmful path with more stress and anxiety. The skills you’ll acquire today were first given to me to help move me past the trauma of witnessing (and being too close to) a tragic accident at the Reno Air Show. (As a Bonus, I've included a current video of the Reno Air Show experience, which is truly amazing!)1
- PART III. CONSTRUCTIVE THINKING: Keeping Caregivers Focused On Effective SolutionsConstructive thinking is the ability to focus on the issue at hand and solve problems without, or with minimal, emotional involvement. Constructive thinking also opens the doors to learn from problem-solving. In this lesson, you will be given the tools to help you separate the peripheral interference from the problem at hand. Having this knowledge, as well as understanding your "neuronet" connections, helps put the right skills to work with less effort.1
